Build Early Money Habits
Background
BEMH is a capstone project I created with Flatiron School. It is learning experience for children 9-13 years old which incorporates interactive elements that can help make the course more enjoyable and increase engagement and retention among the children. Designed to be an accessible interface that accommodates a diverse range of learners, including those with physical disabilities.

Preliminary Research
COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS
I conducted a competitive analysis to compare other financial literacy for kids programs to understand existing programs, and determine areas of improvement. There are free programs that I had to set BEMH apart from which I found challenging. How do you make a program you have to pay for be more appealing than something that is free? Using the SWOT method, I was able to find crucial features in order to create a better product.
CRUCIAL FEATURES

Understanding content hierarchy was important due to the amount of information I was going to be providing. I referred to Jacob Nielsen’s 10 Usability Heuristics to familiarize myself with the program’s usability as well as created an affinity diagram to create a product that would suit my users.
During this process, I found that I had to simplify what was already available to make it easier to use for someone who has never used a computer before or has very little experience with them. Not only did I have to simplify the program but make it interactive and appealing. Which meant designing a game and reward system for the user.
I first designed by hand a low fidelity sketch to map out a mid fidelity prototype and designed a high fidelity prototype for users with a sample of how the dashboard of the program would function and provide a mini sample of the lessons.
Qualitative Interviews
I conducted primary research through interviews with 5 participants who have children that are 9-13 years old and had them test out the high fidelity prototype as guardians in aiding children into learning about financial literacy.

ANALYSIS
There are many tribes in the Philippines as there are over 1,000 islands in the archipelago. To represent the different tribes, I had chosen to design the shirts as indigenous tattoos from the precolonial times from two our of the three major regions of the Philippines. In 2018, I referenced the painted people of Luzon’s style of tattoos and Visayas for 2019. I did this in hopes to be inclusive.
GRLZ: Scary Stories
Overview
During my 4 years in Juneau, AK. I was part of a womxns collective that curated events for womxn to take up space in a safe space at a queer bar called Black Sheep. I hosted open mics with three others and created posters and content for our instagram.
For Halloween, I put together with the group an even to tell scary stories the entire nite for open mic. We wanted a larger event as it was for the highly favored holiday of Halloween. I teamed up with Krista Barril, a videographer to promote the event.
We heavily referenced the show, American Horror Story and created a script with the GRLZ Hosts as the actors.
